Description: Sketch of the Shiloh Methodist Church done by Alfred E. Mathews of the 31st O.V.I. The Battle of Shiloh, which took place on June 6-7, 1862, was named after this log church near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. Mathews (1831-1874) was born in Bristol, England, but moved with his family to settle in Rochester, Ohio, when he was two years old. He was working as a schoolteacher in Alabama when the Civil War broke out, and returned north to enlist in the 1st Ohio Artillery in August 1861. He later joined the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in battles including Corinth, Stone River, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. During his three-year enlistment he drew numerous sketches of scenes he witnessed, which were made into lithographs and sold, including publication in Harper's Weekly. He moved west following the war and continued his work as an artist, until his sudden death at the age of 43. He is buried on his ranch near Longmount, Colorado. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Portrait of Thomas Worthington, Jr. on the cover of his "Ballads of the Rebellion" about the Battle of Shiloh (1862). At the beginning of the Civil War, Thomas Worthington helped organize the 46th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry where he ranked as colonel. After his regiment fought in the Battle of Shiloh, he became very critical of Union commanders, including Generals Sherman and Grant. Worthington was court-martialed in August 1862, found guilty on some charges, and relieved of his command. Afterwards, he published books and pamphlets, including this one published ca. 1879, telling his account of the Battle of Shiloh. Text above picture reads "BALLADS OF THE REBELLION, with a Sketch of his Service in the Civil War, and evidence of treachery by Union Commanders at Shiloh; obtained by his Court-Martial, after all efforts for an inquiry had failed." Description: This illustration depicts the scene at Shiloh Church, near Pittsburg Landing, on April 7, 1862. The First Ohio Regiment fought to recapture a Union artillery, eventually resulting in the conclusion of the Battle of Shiloh. The illustration shows Union forces firing cannons and preparing to surge toward the artillery, which has several men on the roof. The bodies of fallen or wounded soldiers and horses are strewn along the front of the buildings, and opposing forces can be seen approaching from the back of the image.
